A new approach to building an "artificial nose" using fluorescent compounds and DNA could accelerate the use of sniffing sensors into the realm of mass production and widespread use, say Stanford chemists. If their method lives up to its promise, it could one day detect everything from incipiently souring milk to high explosives.
When patients need a bone graft for a foot or ankle surgery, bone often is taken from another part of their body. Now surgeons are using new methods to get bone material and even stem cells right "off the shelf," according to Glenn M. Weinraub, DPM, FACFAS, a California foot and ankle surgeon who is leading a discussion among surgeons on the next decade of bone healing at the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons' Annual Scientific Conference in Fort Lauderdale.
"It's a game-changer," Michel Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS, said. "I am completely amazed." It was noted that anti-HIV drugs called antiretroviral drugs can suppress HIV in an infected patient and also help to prevent its spread through intercourse, he said. He predicted a rethink of the strategies that have evolved since the first cases of AIDS were recorded in June 1981. "The implications are multiple," said Mr Sidibe. "However, money will be the major challenge."
Administration of routine infant immunizations with a vaccine for serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis, a bacterium that is a cause of serious disease such as sepsis and meningitis, was effective against meningococcal strains and produced minimal interference with the response to the routine vaccinations, according to a study in the February 8 issue of JAMA.

This is no trivial feat, given that specialized blood vessels act as a barrier between the nervous system and the bloodstream.
